Learn the art of Pewter making at The Foundry at the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre
For the last 13 years, the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre has stood as the go-to place to experience pewter-both as a beautiful piece to be admired and as a craft. Closely bound to Kuala Lumpur’s colonial past and kept alive through the passion and imagination of its artisans, the centre has remained one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations.
In addition to allowing guests to view impressive pewter art pieces and the vast Royal Selangor collections on display at The Gallery, the centre also provides access to the art of pewter crafting itself. The Factory tour for instance brings guests to the factory floor, the heart of Royal Selangor’s brand of pewter crafting.
Here, visitors acquaint themselves with the processes of the craft and also provided a privileged glance at the Royal Selangor factory floor where real-time manufacturing takes place. The tour also includes a brief look at the craft of fine jewellery by Selberan, another Royal Selangor company.
But for visitors who want to gain better insight to the pewter making craft, they can do so at The Foundry. The 60-minute experiential workshop allows participants to immerse themselves in the craft of pewtersmithing and learn the processes involved in making a pewter accessory.
Under the watchful eye of an instructor, participants are guided through the fundamentals of casting, polishing and decorating their own take-home pewter accessory. Inspired participants can also choose to produce their own one of a kind accessory freehand.
Additionally, visitors are also encouraged to enrol in the centre’s popular experiential workshops- The School of Hard Knocks (SOHK). A short fun-filled half-hour session, SOHK participants learn to create their own take-home souvenir, a pewter dish using traditional tools, similar to those used by pewtersmiths more than 100 years ago.
Priced at RM180 (inclusive of GST) per person, The Foundry is the perfect place for spending family-friendly weekend or teambuilding. The Royal Selangor Visitor Centre is open from 9am to 5pm every day, including weekends and public holidays. Admission to the Visitor Centre is free, and complimentary guided tours are provided.
