Like many of its neighbouring cities on the east coast, Kuantan is often seen as a stop to pass through on the way to other more exciting destinations. But set aside some time to explore the capital of Pahang, or at least to spend on their excellent beaches. The Teluk Cempedak beach winds along the coast, fringed with casuarina trees and alternating between golden sands and rocky outcrops. Windsurf, jetski or simply people-watch the day away before heading back into the city at night, when things really get going. Fuel up with a meal of delicious, smokey ikan bakar (grilled fish) then work your way through the sprawling night markets to load up on late-night snacks and local handicrafts.
