Summer is soon upon us, and it’s the perfect season to celebrate music, travel and a little bit of adventure. Speaking of music, there’s nothing quite like the Rainforest World Music Festival in Kuching’s Sarawak Cultural Village, happening 26–28 June. If you’re a music lover, this is one for the bucket list. Listen to world music performed by artists from across the globe, from mesmerising throat singers to vibrant ensembles, all set against a relaxed, laid-back atmosphere. Try to catch the daytime workshops too, led by the performers themselves; they’re a brilliant way to learn about craft and gain a deeper appreciation for the art.
While you’re there, our Kuching cover story will show you how much there is to explore around the region, from historic archeological sites in Santubong and rare wildlife spotting at Kuching Wetlands National Park and Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, to cave adventures in the gold-mining town of Bau.
For those looking to completely unplug this summer, our Maldives feature is a must-read. Resorts there are taking wellness-led journeys to the next level, offering a chance to step away from screens, reset and truly be present.
Japan fans know Tokyo and Kyoto, but Fukuoka in the south offers a quieter charm, where scenic sights, Hakata culture and lively yatai food stalls await. We asked three locals to share their insider tips for first-time visitors to make the experience unforgettable.
And if you’re wondering where else to venture to, our pages are packed with inspiration: take a weekend in Phuket; explore ancient Newar traditions in Kirtipur; recalibrate your nervous system with tuning forks at Mi Sol Spa in Da Nang; wander Paris, the City of Light, like a local; enjoy a vegetarian journey in Murshidabad near Kolkata; or partake in Sichuan’s bold flavours in Chengdu.
While travel today requires a bit more planning and flexibility, the world is ready to be explored. Here’s to a summer of adventure, connection and a touch of magic everywhere you go.
Go forth and wander!
