As the year winds down, there’s a certain restlessness that sets in. Perhaps you’ve been stuck in a routine and simply want to spend a few days somewhere that feels different from the everyday. A change of scenery may be just what you need to shake things up.
For some creative inspiration, look to Fukuoka. Japan’s laid-back southern city is becoming an exciting creative hub, where contemporary art mingles with centuries-old traditions. You’ll find Kenji Yanobe’s metallic Ship’s Cat sculpture out in the city, while at Nakamura Ningyo, traditional Hakata doll-making is being given a fresh spin with pop culture. It’s an easygoing environment that seems to give artists and makers the freedom to experiment.
If what you need is some quality time with the family, Trivandrum may surprise you. Besides its temples, palaces and museums, Kerala’s capital has a zoo that feels like a green park in the middle of the city, along with a Magic Planet, planetarium, scenic reservoir boat rides and coastal backwaters. There’s plenty here to keep everyone entertained, with a good mix of culture, adventure and fun.
And with the festive season just around the corner, Manila is ready to celebrate. The Philippines is famous for getting into the Christmas spirit as soon as the “ber” months arrive, and by December, the cheer is in full swing. Our itinerary takes you from the Spanish-era walls of Fort Santiago to contemporary Manila’s art, architecture, food and live performances, before ending in nature at its nearby georeserves.
There’s plenty more to discover in these pages, from ticking off Paris’ must-dos and checking into a historic hotel in Chiang Mai to exploring Surabaya’s old quarters and seeing Seoul through a local’s eyes. Wherever you’re headed next, we hope you find something that inspires you. And to everyone celebrating, wishing you a joyous holiday season.
Go forth and wander!
