You need not take Berlin off your travel list during the winter months
Spending the winter in Berlin can be rather daunting. Days are short, the temperature is extremely chilly and there isn’t much sunshine even during the day. Nevertheless, there is still plenty to see and do – minus the massive crowds that you’d have to contend with during the warmer months.
Spend Time In The Museums
The city has quite a number of museums to suit diverse interests. An architecture and design buff? The Bauhaus Archives is a must visit. Families with kids would probably enjoy the Museum of Natural History. For a look at culture, the Neues Museum provides the best scopes. There is even a museum dedicated especially to Berlin’s famous dish – the currywurst!
Tour The Landmarks
The major tourist spots – Brandenburg Gate, Jewish Memorial, Checkpoint Charlie and Berlin Wall Memorial, amongst many others – all remain accessible. The best part about paying these sites a visit during the colder months is that you’ll have a better chance at getting snapshots without strangers filling your frame. Just make sure to bundle up as they are all outdoors.
Shop The Malls
Another great way to get out of the cold is to do a little bit of shopping. You can find a variety of fashion labels in the different malls – from luxury to high street, as well as local designers. Galeries Lafayette, Mall of Berlin, Kaufhaus des Westens, Alexa and more – are retail havens that will take up hours of your daily schedule.
Visit Berlin’s Markets
Almost all shops (including the malls) in Berlin are closed on Sundays. However, fret not during the colder season. That’s when you hit the local markets in different areas of the city. Mauerpark’s for example, sells new and vintage clothes, art, antiques, furniture and any other trinkets you can think of. During the year-end, you’ll have additional Christmas markets that lend the city a joyous, festive atmosphere too.
