We ask designer Shreya Mathew to share her top shopping picks across the city
Centuries of trade, migration and coastal life have shaped Kochi’s multicultural roots – a legacy its design scene wears well. From heritage crafts and modern designs to a clever mashup of both, the city’s studios and stores are full of fresh finds to take home. But where to begin? Shreya Mathew, founder and principal designer at Kochi-based Mado Studio (@mado_studio), curates a shopping list.
1 I often suggest that my clients check out Oorjaa lights from furniture brand Magari. These gorgeous lamps, inspired by seed pods, lilies and even sea sponges, are like little sculptures of light. They’re not just striking but also thoughtful. Each one is made using natural, biodegradable or reclaimed materials like driftwood, banana fibre paper, waste fishing nets and copper wire. @magari.india
2 Each handcrafted cushion from Kada Annahmol feels like a piece of heritage yet it adds an eclectic pop to a contemporary home. I especially love their one-of-a-kind designs made from vintage ikat weaves and kantha embroidery. @kadaannahmol
3 The Guest Room is a must-visit for tableware. Its unique pieces are perfect for presenting a signature dish or adding character to an everyday shelf. My favourites are the conversation starters, like their sculptural bread baskets and boat-shaped bamboo platters. @theguestroom.kochi
4 If you’re into quirky décor, Pepper House Design Shop’s Claymen sculptures capture the commonfolk’s everyday dilemmas in delightfully odd ways, adding a witty, thought-provoking touch to your walls or tabletops. It’s dysfunctional minimalism at its best, the kind that makes you pause and smile. @pepperhouseshop
5 Rouka by Sreejith Jeevan is a modern ode to the region’s culture. I adore the tapestry designs that weave in elements from Kerala’s picturesque landscapes, especially the appliqué work and thoughtfully crafted home textiles. @roukabysreejithjeevan
6 These handmade ceramic pieces from Via Kerala come in a mix of colours add a charming touch to any coffee table. They also make thoughtful gifts for anyone who loves Malayalam lettering, typography or calligraphy. It’s a true celebration of Kerala’s culture, beautifully designed to fit into any space, anywhere in the world. @viakeralathat
