Local designer Khoon Hooi has teamed up with Mandarin Oriental KL on a limited-edition afternoon tea set with a delicious Peranakan twist
Local fashion designer Khoon Hooi has a new collaboration – but this time, not of the sartorial nature. The 48-year-old designer behind his namesake womenswear label has partnered with Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur (MOKL) on a new Peranakan-themed afternoon tea set.
Called “Dondang Sayang”, the new afternoon tea spread is as tasty to the palate as it is easy on the eyes. Pastry chef Suzana Anuar and her team at MOKL have taken cues from Khoon Hooi’s longtime passion for the Nonya Kebaya and cleverly referenced them on each of the treats.
There are all the usual teatime classics like scones and cakes served with clotted cream, jam and, in true Malaysian fashion, kaya. And on the savoury end of the new menu, drool-worthy bites like a roasted chicken with percik mayonnaise, ratatouille rendang with zucchini carpaccio and other delicious fusion creations await.
Enjoy the sumptuous spread with Khoon Hoo’s favourite teas – the lemon and ginger and pu erh – or their own brew of choice. And once diners have had their fill, they can browse the designer’s latest collection at the strategically-located Khoon Hooi pop-up at the hotel lobby after.
The Dondang Sayang tea set is priced at RM158 per person. It’s available daily from 2.30 pm to 6 pm (Monday to Saturday) and 3pm to 6pm (Sunday) at MOKL’s Lobby Lounge, from now till 5 December. 10% of the proceeds will go to the Malaysian Institute of Arts.
