Do your part and help save the elephant
Today, on 12 August, the world celebrates World Elephant Day. The initiative, which was established in 2012 aims to raise awareness to the ongoing struggle to protect the world's elephant population.
According to reports, if nothing is done, some populations of elephants could be extinct from the wild by 2025. This means that there are approximately 30,000 elephants dissapearing each year.
The root of the problem behind the demise of these wildlife giants is due to poaching and shockingly it has been revealed that in Africa alone, an elephant is lost every 15 minutes to poachers. It has also been reported that only approximately 400,000 African elephants are now left in the world.
But steps have been taken to help save the elephants and World Elephant Day acts as a platform to highlight the plight of the elephants as well as the efforts being taken to help save them from extinction.
The Buckingham Palace Declaration, which was set up on 15th March acts as a key action plan to strengthen defences against trafficking. The landmark agreement is commited towards taking real steps to shut down the routes exploited by traffickers of the illegal wildlife trade moving their products.
The declaration takes steps to remove the vulnerabilities in transportation and customs to tackle the criminals currently exploiting them. The declaration will be signed by the taskforce members to represent their agreement to eleven commitments.
World Elephant Day also helps raise awarness about these creatures and encourages the public to do their part to help save them. Organisations like United For Wildlife hosts numerous programmes and initiatives, which you can be a part of.
