Inaugural trail run in Kelabit Highlands, Sarawak set to offer unique experience
A new trail run has been launched to introduce trail runners from across the region to the scenic beauty of Bario in the Kelabit Highlands of Sarawak, Malaysia. Runners Wild Bario is jointly organized by Specialised Sports Services and the community of Bario, to introduce the untouched lands nestled in the cool highlands of Sarawak.
The race will be held on the 16 May 2015 where intrepid trail run enthusiasts will be flagged off from Bario to cover a course set over 50km that will take them past pristine forests, tropical mountains, large patches of rice fields and past idyllic villages nestled in the heart of Borneo. However, due to the remote location of the race, participation is limited to just 50 runners.
However it is not just about running as the trail event will also seek to promote tourism for Bario and surrounding villages such as Pa Lungan, Pa Dalih and Pa Umor. The Event organisers will also work with the locals to market their tourism attractions toward the adventurous minded or to those seeking tranquil getaways. Runners Wild Bario will also assist the local community in repairing broken infrastructure such as broken bridges across swamps which are used by the local school children and tourists.
Another goal of the event is its community return program as Runners Wild Bario will create and maintain a website to promote tourism in the communities. There are plans in place to provide training for locals from the communities to be able to contribute to the online platform, and to create a sustainable marketing medium for tourism in the Kelabit Highlands.
