A dazzling Art Deco-inspired hotel opens in Mumbai
Talk about a grand welcome. The new Fairmont Mumbai, which opened in April beside the city’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Airport, looks designed to bowl you over. It’s a luxury hotel of monumental scale – 446 guest rooms, a 21,000sq ft ballroom and a whole floor dedicated to wellness facilities – with a gilded, gleaming lobby that harks back to an opulent age of jazz, Art Deco and luxury travel.
Beyond the bells and whistles, the hotel feels brilliantly international – its five dining outlets serve a variety of world cuisines, from Indian and Indo-French to Mediterranean and Cantonese. The hotel’s all-day dining restaurant, The Merchants, features six live kitchens to satisfy almost any craving and is a nod to ancient traders as well as to Mumbai as a maritime hub, then and now.
