For the past several years, Kuala Lumpur has played host to a number of top-ranked tennis players, all of whom converged unto the city to participate in several high-stake tournaments. This year alone, the capital of Malaysia has seen the best women tennis players featured in the BMW Open and this September, tennis fans will get to see the best of men’s tennis do the same in the 7th edition of the Malaysian Open.
Part of the ATP 250 tournament, the Malaysian Open has been a key fixture on the Asian tennis calendar ever since its inception seven years ago. This year’s tournament held from 26 September to 4 October promises the very best of men’s tennis, with a total prize money of USD1.04 million up for grabs.
Held in the indoor hard courts at Putra Stadium, Bukit Jalil, the tournament is set to welcome back one of the world’s most consistent top-ten stars, eighth ranked David Ferrer of Spain along with fellow countryman 12-ranked, Feliciano Lopez, who is enjoying the best season of his career. Also making the trip to the capital are Grigor Dimitrov (ranked 11th) from Bulgaria and the 20-year-old ‘hometown’ favourite, Australian, Nick Kyrgios (ranked 30th).
The unveiling of the first four players will undoubtedly be an enticement for tennis fans as more ATP stars are set to join the prestigious tournament in September. The Malaysian Open will also see entries from tennis players from the region, which should spur more local support from Southeast Asian fans.
