From live entertainment and sporting events to international congresses, Sarawak’s capital is becoming a destination for memorable gatherings
Kuching is well known for its food, culture and riverfront. But there’s another side to the city that visitors may not be as familiar with. People come to Kuching for very different reasons – entertainment, business, sport, research and major international events.
One weekend, crowds might be cheering at a concert. The next, the same venue could be welcoming athletes, exhibitors or scientists from around the world.
At Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), that variety is already part of the calendar. Beyond conferences and exhibitions, its halls have welcomed concerts, sporting events, banquets and celebrations of all sizes. The benefits extend beyond the venue. Every event brings visitors into Kuching, filling hotel rooms, supporting local businesses and introducing new audiences to Sarawak. For some, it’s a first opportunity to explore the city or stay a little longer.

A different crowd, a different conversation
In 2027, BCCK will host muay thai and taekwondo competitions during the 34th SEA Games, bringing regional sporting action to a venue more commonly associated with conferences.
The calendar also reflects Sarawak’s growing industries. EIC Connect Energy Borneo arrives in February, followed by International Energy Week in July, bringing together companies, investors and industry leaders from across the energy sector.
Healthcare, science and public policy will also feature prominently, with international gatherings covering neuroanaesthesia and critical care, human genetics and science advice to governments.
More than just entries on an events calendar, these gatherings create opportunities for local industries, universities, researchers and professional communities to connect with international counterparts.
What an event leaves behind
The value of an event isn’t always measured by attendance.
At the 51st IUPAC World Polymer Congress (MACRO 2026), which welcomed more than 800 delegates, Sarawak’s first Zero Food Waste to Landfill pilot demonstrated how international events can make a difference locally.
Carried out with Business Events Sarawak, the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry, Conference Partners Asia and BCCK, the initiative achieved 92% landfill diversion. Suitable surplus food was redistributed locally, including to Kuching Community Social Support Centre, while other food waste was composted.
The initiative demonstrated what can happen when organisations work together, with lessons now being carried into future events.
“BCCK was purpose-built as part of Sarawak’s wider development ambitions, and its impact should reach well beyond the venue itself” – David Emir Bareng, COO of BCCK
Making room for bigger ideas
As Kuching attracts a wider range of events, BCCK is preparing for its next chapter.
Targeted to be operational in 2028, its expansion will connect the existing centre with a new adjoining facility. The integrated events campus will feature two main halls, one multipurpose hall and 34 meeting rooms, accommodating up to 15,000 people at a time.
Beyond accommodating bigger crowds, the expansion will offer greater flexibility to host international exhibitions, congresses, sporting competitions, concerts and celebrations, including several events taking place simultaneously.
Among the major international gatherings already confirmed for Kuching in 2028 is the IWA World Water Congress & Exhibition, which will bring thousands of water professionals and companies to Sarawak.

“BCCK was purpose-built as part of Sarawak’s wider development ambitions, and its impact should reach well beyond the venue itself,” says David Emir Bareng, COO of BCCK.
As more events come to Kuching, there is also an opportunity to encourage new hotels, hospitality businesses and other developments around the Isthmus, strengthening the wider destination.
For event attendees, Kuching offers more than what happens inside the venue, from local flavours and cultural experiences to a different side of Borneo waiting to be discovered.
And for organisers with an idea for a conference, exhibition, concert or sporting event, Kuching might just be the place to bring it to life.
The next big reason to visit Kuching could be yours.
