Check out these unique activities you can do in the capital of New Zealand
New Zealand has always carved a reputation for its vast natural beauty. But the renowned destination has a lot more on offer for visitors and Lord of the Rings fans. If you’re planning a trip to the capital of New Zealand in the near future, you may want to put these unique activities on your itinerary…
Hang out with red pandas
Firstly, prepare for your most popular Instagram pics ever. Then, head to Wellington Zoo’s website and book a close encounter with the red pandas. These little guys will climb all over you and nibble fruit from your hands, making for the most adorable selfies of your life.
Visit space
Okay, maybe we’re pushing it a bit with this, but a visit to Space Place is the next best thing. The observatory’s awe-inspiring full-dome planetarium shows will take you to the depths of the ocean, into the earth’s core and out into the solar system. On fine nights, you can stargaze through the huge Thomas Cooke telescope too.
Save your pedalling power
If you fancy exploring the city at your own pace, visit Switched On Bikes and hire an e-bike. Get a guided tour of some of Wellington’s most beautiful spots. You can enjoy the view from the city’s peaks while still saving your thigh muscles!
See kiwi in their natural habitat
And we don’t mean in an enclosure. At Zealandia, just 10 minutes from the city, you’re afforded the rare opportunity to see kiwis and tuatara – the closest living relative of the dinosaur – as well as plenty of other native creatures hanging out in the wild. Many of the cute and friendly native animals wander freely in the enclosure so you can get up close. You’ll have to book a night tour if you want to meet our national bird, but it’s well worth it.
Explore the whole city on foot
With a city centre spanning just 2km, Wellington is compact and walkable. The central city is best explored on foot and it takes just 20 minutes to walk from one end of time to the other. Too easy.
