Head on to Trafalgar Square, London in May for a symphonic treat by the LSO
The London Symphony Orchestra is considered as one of the world’s best orchestras and one that truly appreciates their fans as well. To repeatedly prove that point, the LSO has hosted a free open-air concert for the last four years for their fans at the iconic Trafalgar Square in the centre of London city.
The 2015 open-air performance will be held on Sunday, 17 May and will feature the LSO with Principal Conductor Valery Gergiev and renowned violinist, Nicola Benedetti who is set to perform movements from Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No 1. The event is the fourth annual concert in the BMW LSO Open Air Classics series, all of which have seen a capacity audience enjoying a free performance by the LSO in the heart of London.
The event aims to bring the experience of live orchestral performance out of the concert hall and make it available and accessible to everyone. Additionally, the open-air performance also provides a stage for the young musicians from LSO On Track, the remarkable initiative for young instrumentalists from East London, to join members of the LSO and musicians from the Guildhall School on stage for the performances of Shostakovich’s Jazz Suites as well.
“Classical music matters. Watching and listening to a world-class orchestra like the LSO playing in a stunning open air environment like Trafalgar Square reminds us of how much we can achieve when we work together,” offered Dr Ian Robertson (Hon DSc) Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG. The event has thus far also featured strongly on the London tourism calendar and remains an important part of the city’s cultural landscape, attracting tourists and visitors to the iconic square for the one of a kind concert.
Kathryn McDowell CBE DL, Managing Director of the LSO agrees. “These concerts have created thrilling musical experiences for many thousands of people of all ages in the audience, and for the Orchestra itself. We’re grateful for the continued support by fans, sponsors, and the Mayor of London who has made it a point to feature this amazing concert as part of London’s musical diary.”
The London Symphony Orchestra’s concert at Trafalgar Square on 17 May begins at 6.30pm. Early arrival is essential to secure entry. Full event information at lso.co.uk/openair
