Melbourne transforms once again into a city of imagination, art and culture
The world's leading creatives will join forces with Melbourne on 21 February 2015 where music, art, theatre, sport, fashion, film, design and performance communities will transform the city into 12 hours of imagination and culture. The event is called 'White Night Melbourne' and is influenced by the international network of 'Nuit Blanche Cities' (which means Sleepless Night) originated in Paris. It is an initiative of the State Government of Victoria aimed at bringing joy and art to night owls and visitors of Victoria.
Launched in 2013, the cultural event features activities that transform more than eight city blocks into unique works of art. Melbourne's city streets, major cultural institutions, public spaces, gardens, landmark buildings and laneways will again play host to Australia's edition of this global phenomenon.
“The upcoming iteration of White Night Melbourne will be a celebration of Melbourne's artistic links to the world. The combined talents of local and international artists will transform our city into a magical experience for all to behold, as we continue to create a ‘night like no other’. White Night Melbourne has quickly become a key event on the Victorian Major Events calendar, as a must do experience and whole city celebration,” said Artistic Director Andrew Walsh.
The 2015 programme offers 90 free activities throughout the city providing diverse and family-friendly selections. There will also be a range of exclusive ticketed events available throughout the 12-hour programme. World Music Stage will boast free shows by Melbourne and international-based artists featuring African beats, European folk, Latin funk and Asian hip-hop.
The full programme will be available on the White Night Melbourne website in February. In the meantime punters can create itineraries for the night by saving favourite events and acts, to maximise the experience.
